Fashionable Options for Dress Coats for Women

If you attend a number of special events or other occasions that require formal attire, then you’re probably in need of dress coats for women. Given that most formal dresses do not provide much warmth, you will need at least one coat to wear to keep the chill away. However, depending on where you live, you may want to have two on hand – a heavier one for the winter and a lighter weight one for the spring.

There are numerous options available but, if you want to look your best, you need to make sure the one you choose to wear fits you well and that it coordinates well with your attire. You likely will not be wearing the coat during the actual event so the only people who will probably see you wearing it are the people who notice you arrive and leave, but this doesn’t mean you should just wear any old coat you have hanging in the back of your closet. You should still take the time and spend the money to get a stylish dress coat to wear.

Choosing a Trench Coat

The trench coat is a very popular option. There are so many different styles and lengths that you really can’t go wrong choosing one of these to wear on those special occasions.

If the dress you are wearing is short, then it’s best to go with a coat that is short in length as well. For instance, if your dress is knee length, choose a coat that is just as long as your dress for the most part. It’s okay if the coat is a tad bit longer or shorter than your dress. While you could wear a longer coat with your knee-length dress, such as one that falls to the middle of your lower legs or to your ankles, you could run into some problems with the way the coat drapes on you. If the formal dress you’re wearing has a shape to the skirt, such as a bell shape, then that is going to show through the long coat and it’s going to make it look awkward.

There are trench coats that have embellishments that dress them up even more than an ordinary trench coat, so if you can find one like this, it will add a bit more flair to your overall look. For example, look for dress coats for women that have things like ruffles along the collar or a bit of glitz on the belt buckle or buttons. Also, be sure to choose one that is in a color that will go well with the dresses you already own.

They can be found in a variety of fabrics and weights, so you could easily find a wool one or another similarly heavy one to wear when it’s cold out and then you can buy one that is made with a lighter material to wear during the spring when there is still a bit of a chill in the air.

Selecting a Long Cardigan Jacket

As an alternative to a trench coat in the springtime, you could opt for wearing a long cardigan jacket. Look for one that has a loose drape that falls to just below your knees and is in an elegant color such as black, white, or ivory. You can either leave the cardigan hanging open or you can belt it around your waist.

Wearing one of these cardigan jackets that is made with cashmere or light wool will provide you with the dressiest appearance while still keeping the chill away. They will also work for wearing on those less formal occasions when you still want to look nice, but don’t need to wear an evening dress. For instance, the long cardigan jacket would look very nice worn over a pair of skinny pants and a satin blouse for a night out at the club or out to dinner with your significant other at a four-star restaurant.

Opting for Faux Fur

Another option is to wear a faux fur coat. These types of coats are quite popular with a lot of women and they are very warm and stylish. Before settling on this type of coat, however, you may want to make sure that the fur is not going to shed all over your little black dress. You don’t want to still be wearing parts of the coat when you take it off to enjoy your evening.

If you don’t like the bulkiness of the faux fur coats but you like the look of them, you can opt for wearing a shrug or a wrap made with faux fur instead. Both of these options will still keep your arms warm but you won’t have to carry around the heaviness that usually comes with wearing a full-length faux fur coat.

Wearing a Blazer

For a more simplistic look, you could choose to wear a blazer. Blazers would look best when worn with a fitted dress or one that at least has a fitted top with a skirt that flows but isn’t too full. If you’re a business woman, chances are you probably already have at least one nice blazer hanging in your closet, so you can save yourself some money and just wear the one you own already.

If boutique dresses have a full skirt, such as a bell-shaped ball gown might, you’d do better to go with a cropped jacket instead of a hip-length blazer. Cropped jackets will keep you warm without hanging strangely against your dress or become bulky, and if there’s a chill in the room, you could even wear the cropped jacket all night instead of shedding it as soon as you arrive at your destination as you would with most other dress coats for women.
