Choose the Right Ladies Formal Shoes

When you have an important event to attend, your outfit must comply with the formal dress code. Selecting the best pair of ladies formal shoes is just as important as choosing the right style of an evening dress or ball gown. In fact, the shoes can actually make or break the outfit. Pairing boutique dresses with the wrong pair of shoes can throw off the look you’re going for and can turn what might have been a stunning outfit into one that falls between business formal and black or white tie formal.

If you aren’t quite sure what kind of shoes work for formal situations, that’s okay. A lot of people are cloudy in that area. The good news is that there are ways you can decipher the difference between a pair of ladies formal shoes and ones that are meant for the office.

The Style of the Shoes

What makes figuring out which shoes are appropriate for formal wear so difficult is that office wear comes in just about every style you can think of, such as heels, flats, sandals, pumps, t-straps, and so much more. If you were to take a look in your closet, you would probably see an assortment of these styles there already, and you probably wear these styles to work at the office or out to dinner. However, just because you have these styles of shoes already, that does not mean they are all appropriate.

When you’re trying to decide on which style of shoes to wear to your event, you should take a few things into consideration such as what type of event it is, whether you’re wearing an evening dress with sleeves or without, what style dress you will be wearing, what the weather will be like, and things of that nature. Once you have the dress picked out, then you can figure out which style of shoes would coordinate well with the rest of your outfit.

Embellishments & Fabrics

The difference between ladies formal shoes and other types isn’t in the style, but rather in the material they’re made of and in the embellishments they contain. For instance, shoes that contain things like zippers, various hardware, or studs on them are more suited for casual or slightly dressier situations. Shoes that contain things like rhinestones, sequins, pearls, brooches or even crystals are more appropriate.

The next thing you can look for when picking out women’s formal footwear is the fabric they are made with. Many formal ladies shoes are made with leather, the same as you would find in a pair of shoes appropriate for business attire or even casual wear. However, it’s the details and embellishments that will turn an ordinary pair of leather shoes for women into a pair of leather shoes.

In addition to leather, look for shoes that are made with suede, satin, or velvet. However, again, you need to decide if the shoes are formal enough or if they would be better suited as regular dress shoes you might wear to the office. Sometimes, because the differences between formal and regular dressy shoes are so slight, you may have to carefully consider whether or not they are going to work with whatever dress you’re wearing. Are the shoes going to add to elegant look your gown will give you or are they going to take away from that elegant look of your formal dress?

If you’re still unsure, browse through some magazines or look around online at some of the shoes that celebrities have worn. This will help you to get an idea of what look the ladies formal shoes you need to purchase should look like, even if you don’t spend as much on them as the celebrities do.

Selecting the Right Color

Some women like to match the color of their shoes with their dress color, which is okay to do if that’s the look you want. However, it’s also perfectly okay to wear a pair of shoes in a contrasting color of your dress. For instance, you can wear a pair of black shoes with just about any color dress, including gold dresses and they will look great. Although, if your dress is a very light color, such as in the pastel range, try to stay away from the black shoes and go with something a bit on the lighter side such as a pair of silver shoes.

If the color of your dress has a medium to dark tone to it or is an earthy color, a pair of gold shoes will look amazing. If you want your shoes to have a bit more of a bold color, then go with a little black dress or one that is a shade of gray or has a print on it as bolder colored shoes will stand out and add a pop of color to your look.

Comfort is Important

All too often women wear uncomfortable shoes that kill their feet because they like how the shoes look with their dress, but you don’t have to suffer all night just to be stylish. When you’re shopping for your ladies shoes, make sure that comfort is on the top of your list of priorities.

You might think they’re impossible to find, but, believe it or not, there are ladies formal shoes out there that won’t squeeze or pinch your feet or cause your feet to swell up so much that you have to practically cut your feet out of them at the end of the night. If you need to, buy some shoe inserts to help with the comfort factor, but you still need to make sure that the shoes fit your feet appropriately or you will end up in pain halfway through the evening.
